This article published in the Mammoth Times on August 17, 2000 provides additional information on the August 7-13, 2000 search for Craig Sweet.
Mammoth Lakes resident Craig Sweet, 41, has been reported missing after failing to show up for work at Cervino's restaurant August 4.
Sweet's car, a blue 1996 Ford Ranger pick-up with a camper shell, was found in the parking lot at Horseshoe Lake. Friends believe Sweet may have gone on a day hike, but say that he is an experienced hiker who knows the area well.
Friends and co-workers contacted the Mammoth Lakes Police Department August 7 concerned about his disappearance and unsure how to proceed. Detectives there advised them to file a missing person's report.
One party reported having seen Sweet August 1, and another reported having seen his passing truck August 2.
Mono County Search and Rescue sent ground teams of 25 volunteers out to scour the Horseshoe Lake area, checking all likely places of travel. Search and Rescue noted that many friends and concerned Mammoth residents joined in the search for Sweet. But as of August 13, no sign of Sweet had been found, although an interagency search posse followed up Search and Rescue's efforts.
Craig Sweet is described by his co-workers as "very reliable." His parents, Dave and Pat Sweet of Oceanside, came to Mammoth to aid with the investigation.
Craig Sweet is described as a white male, 5'4", 150 pounds, with brown eyes, brown hair and a medium complexion.
