This page is a supplement to the Bears, Backpackers, & bags of food page which you should read for a full understanding of the subject.
Use of Bear Resistant Food Containers is required in many National Parks, including Yosemite and Sequoia-Kings Canyon in the California Sierra. Some National Forests, including Inyo National Forest in the California Sierra require these containers in specified high bear activity areas. You should contact the Forest or Park you will be visiting to determine their requirements before leaving home for your trip.
It is against the law to not properly store food to prevent access by animals. Therefore, failure to use agency approved methods can result in a citation and fine. If an approved canister is required, your Wilderness Permit will not be issued unless you present the canister(s) you are using for inspection.
Some containers are approved by the agencies, some are not (but may still be suitable for your needs). Check with the Forest or Park before renting or purchasing a container. Which container is best for you will depend on the types of trips you normally take and the areas you normally visit. Some containers can be rented at outdoor sporting goods stores, some from the manufacturer, some from the Forest or Park.
Weight, bulk and limited capacity are the down side of these containers ... having food to eat so you can complete your trip and protecting the health of bears are the up side. The solid canister versions can also be used as a table or seat. See the Bears, Backpackers, & bags of food page for information on the need for these containers. See the The Care And Feeding Of Your Bear Canister for ideas on how to get the most out of your canister.
